• How do I prime my Black Berkey elements?

  Use the included Prime Rite Universal Primer attached to a cold water faucet, or use the tan priming button. Run cold water through the element until it sweats beads of water for about 1 minute and the water runs clear.

• How often should I replace the Black Berkey filters?

  It is recommended to replace Black Berkey Elements every 3,000 gallons per filter, or 6,000 gallons for a set of two. Replacement may be needed sooner depending on the quality of your water source.

• What is the red food coloring test?

  The red food coloring test verifies that your system is assembled correctly and has no internal leaks. Add artificial red food color to the upper chamber; if the water dispensed from the lower chamber is clear, the elements are sealed properly.

• Can I use softened water in my Berkey system?

  No. Using softened water or salt water can clog the filter's pores and will void your warranty. Always use the cleanest freshwater source available, and avoid hot or boiling water.
